AMSTERDAM, NL (CelebrityAccess) — The Sugar Factory, an Amsterdam club that billed itself as a venue for live music and theater, abruptly shut down last week after its operators filed for bankruptcy.
A statement by the venue’s owners said: “As of Monday the 7th of January Sugar Factory Amsterdam will close its doors and has filed for bankruptcy. The club will no longer be able to host events.
“In the last couple of months, the owners of Sugar Factory have done everything they can in order to ensure the survival of the club, but the funds proved inadequate. On the 7th of January 2019 the club will close its doors after fourteen years. The bankruptcy affects more than fifty employees and freelancers. The ticket sales for upcoming gigs and club events, which were planned until the end of April, have been stopped. The owners of Sugar Factory regret that so many people will be duped.”
The 750-capacity club first opened its doors in 2005 as a theater with the aim of presenting live music and in 2012, the Sugar Factory expanded its offerings with a refurb that included the addition of a nightclub.
Artists who performed at the Sugar Factory over the years included internationally recognized talent like The End Girls, comedian Greg Shapiro.J. Dilla, Carl Craig, Gilles Peterson, Roy Ayers, Lily Allen, Modeselektor, Joss Stone, Madlib, Frankie Knuckles, Gregory Porter, Kerri Chandler, SUUNS, Âme & Dixon, Black Coffee, Elijah Wood and many others.
As well, the club opened its stage during the week to external promoters, while also staging in-house productions. Last year, the club hosted 405 club events, as well as 165 live concerts, the club’s owners said.
Canceled performances include Melliflow; We Play House, Kevin Krauter, Mothers, Death Valley Girls, The Maureens, and Techno Tribe with DJ Emerson, among others.
