BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — New head coach Spencer Danielson announced eighteen new players, two of them, are transfers from junior colleges, and the rest are upcoming freshmen. Danielson said the staff didn't focus all of their attention on the portal since their main goal was to find players that fit into their program. Danielson said, "We were not going to take any player of any position just because we "need one", it has to be the right one.".
Danielson said that he communicated to every new potential team member exactly what they were signing up for. He said, "This is exactly what it's gonna be this is how hard it's gonna be, this is how many decks you're going to run in the summertime, this is what time we're going to wake you up to practice for workout.".
Danielson said it was important for him to be transparent with each player so that when they decided to commit he knew they wanted to work hard and would be a good fit for the program. he said, "It has to be the right one, because in this day and age, in college football, if it's not the right one, then they won't be here anymore.".
When asked about those players who had committed when Andy Avalos was still head coach, Danielson gave credit to the staff for reassuring them. Saying they put a lot of effort into building a relationship and communicating through the uncertainty with each player. Danielson said, "They didn't just commit here because of a coach. That's important. That's the relationship that they built with them and then with the uncertainty of it... that they chose to be here and to stay committed.".
All of those who had committed under Avalos have stayed throughout the change to Danielson. Danielson says his main goal is to develop the group and prepare them for the season, and the future.
Nine of the new players are early enrollees and will be starting with the team in January.
