Caldwell, ID (CBS2) — Canyon County Prosecutor Bryan Taylor announced the sentencing of 35-year-old Esmeralda Ahumada of Caldwell for second-degree murder.
Ahumada shot and killed her step-grandfather on August 25, 2022. She pleaded guilty pursuant to a plea agreement in February of this year.
She initially fled the scene but later turned herself into the West Valley Medical Center for a voluntary commitment.Ahumada told police she shot her step-grandfather to end the sexual abuse she had endured since childhood.
She was sentenced to 12 years fixed plus 10 years indeterminate in the custody of the Idaho Department of Corrections.
During the sentencing hearing, the Honorable Thomas W. Whitney spoke about the difficult nature of the case, including Ahumada's upbringing, mental health issues and the sexual abuse she sustained.
Prosecutor Taylor said this case is tragic in more ways that one. “We encourage anyone who is suffering or has suffered from sexual abuse to report it to law enforcement and allow the justice system to intervene,” Taylor said.
