The Idaho Humane Society is calling for an investigation into the allegations of a teacher feeding a live puppy to a snapping turtle inside a classroom in Preston.

"It is a moral responsibility that every animal has a painless death," the Idaho Humane Society said. "There is a basic ethic of care that all stewards of domestic animals must follow whether it is in regards to a household dog or livestock in the field; whether an animal kept as a pet or raised for food and fiber; used in research or part of a teaching exercise."

It's reported that Robert Crosland, a teacher at Preston Jr. High, reportedly fed the puppy to a snapping turtle after school in front of some students.

The Franklin County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the case.

"There have been a considerable amount of public reaction regarding the allegations being made," said Vic A. Pearson, Franklin County's prosecuting attorney. "I understand the reaction of the public regarding this incident but would ask for some patience at this time."

Pearson says the number of calls into the sheriff's office and prosecutor's office are only hindering the case and investigation.

The Humane Society says it's also asking Idaho Fish and Game to see if the snapping turtle was legally obtained.
