Luke Bryan’s That’s My Kind Of Night is not your typical wine and restaurant kind of evening culminated with some movie reruns. It’s more of a simple kind of night with a jacked-up track, beer, fishing, and skinny-dipping sprinkled with a little hell of fun. The song was penned by award-winning songwriter Dallas Davidson alongside Ashley Gorley and Chris DeStefano.

When Davidson sent the song to Luke Bryan, he immediately digged it and told him that he would put out the song as his next single. True to his word, Luke released the song in August 2013 as his second single from his album Crash My Party. The track garnered commercial success, which set him a record to be the first male country music artist to simultaneously top Billboard’s Hot Country Song and Top Country Albums chart.

Aside from that, it also debuted at number 21 on the Billboard Country Airplay and also charted in the top 15 of Billboard Hot 100. On May 20, 2014, it was certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA and after a month, it reached its two million sales mark.

That’s My Kind Of Night also earned him three nominations from three different award-giving bodies in 2014, namely the iHeartRadio Music Award for Country Song of the Year, Billboard Music Award for Top Country Song, and lastly CMT Music Award for Video of the Year.

Despite the commercial success of the song, it also earned some harsh negative reviews. Taste of Country’s Billy Duke rated the song 2.5 out of 5, describing the song as ‘corny-cool’ though he applauded Bryan for his performance of the song. He also said that it was an eye-roller from start to finish noting that the only novelty in the song was the sly references to anal sex.

Ben Foster of Country Universe also gave it a low rating of D- critically noting the lyricism of the song, which was an insult to the history of country music as well as the intelligence of fans. He also called it a shameless recycle of cliches right off the opening verse.

And lastly, there was also American singer-songwriter Zac Brown, who blatantly called the song the worst song he has ever heard. His comment prompted defense from Bryan’s side with artist Jason Aldean and co-writer Dallas Davidson speaking out.

This song was only one of Luke Bryan songs that put him in the controversial spotlight. Nevertheless, the song is still a good listen considering its chart success and numerous nominations. Watch the official music video below directed by Shaun Silva.
