On Sunday (June 9), coach Juan Carlos Ferrero sat inside the Philippe-Chatrier to watch the Roland Garros final between his current and former pupils. Carlos Alcaraz, who is currently under the tutelage of Ferrero, took on Alexander Zverev and beat him in five sets 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
Ferrero started his coaching career by working with Zverev in 2017, but about eight months later, they parted ways because of differences between them. Then in 2019, the Spanish coach started coaching a 16-year-old Alcaraz and their partnership has become a success. Last year in an interview, the former World No.1 explained the difference between working with Sascha and Alcaraz.
With Carlos, it was different because we started from the beginning and I had the opportunity to create something from the inside and like I told you, he had the potential and he showed it. It was a big decision to make. It was ultimately the opposite of what I experienced with Zverev in the past. It was no longer a life of private jets and luxury hotels.Juan Carlos Ferrero told Tennis Majors
Under Ferrero’s tutelage, Alcaraz has lifted 14 titles on the ATP Tour, including three Grand Slam trophies. The 21-year-old became the youngest player to win Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces, winning the 2024 Roland Garros, the 2023 Wimbledon Championships, and the 2022 US Open.
Juan Carlos Ferrero shed light on working with Alexander Zverev
After ending the partnership with Alexander Zverev, Juan Carlos Ferrero criticized the German’s attitude and work ethic. Ferrero explained why, due to irregularity, Sascha could not win a Grand Slam match. Ferrero felt that earning lots of money when a player is young can make him ‘dizzy‘.
The 2003 French Open champion accused Zverev of getting distracted easily by phone calls, social media, and friends. He felt Zverev loved to fool around on Instagram and not think about tennis, blaming Sascha for not respecting his team members as well.
Zverev was, for example, three hours on the court, but he could not perform quality training for an hour and a half. There were protests. Stops. Anger. Distractions. At the time, we collided due to his lack of punctuality and lack of respect for the team members, even though his father helped me a lot.Juan Carlos Ferrero said on the 3iGuales podcast (via Tennis Majors)
Zverev, a former World No.2, has progressed to two Grand Slam finals in his career so far. The first was the 2020 US Open, while the last was the Roland Garros final against Carlos Alcaraz. He has an Olympic gold medal he won in 2020.
